Postby holly wilson » Sun Dec 06, 2009 11:54 pm

You need dog sticks,Frankfurt's,flower and water, food coloring, deep fryer filled with fresh cooking oil...(1) stick the dog with the stick. (2) mix the flower in a large bucket. (3) add water and food coloring to give it a golden look. (4) use a paint mixing tool on a drill to mix the batter.(5) stick the dog on a stick in the batter and twirl the end of the stick around with your fingers. (6) pull the dog on a stick out of the batter bucket and drop it into the deep fryer for 2 or 3 min. (7)pull out,let oil drain, hold on to the end of the stick and dip the other end of the fried dog in the source bucket and Wola!! you have your self a "Dagwood Dog"

Yum!

"Dagwood dog" must be a regional New York name? Me and my central-US self did not recognize the name. I was almost afraid to look....thought they might be something like those "Rocky Mountain Meatballs"...ahem... :D

Welcome back HJ

Dagwood Dogs are always at every agricultural show in every town across Australia. I seem to remember them first in the 1950's and the stand featured Dagwood Bumstead as the cook. A simple snag with a wooden skewer through it, dipped in batter and deep fried. Had a few in my early days but have never had the stomaach for deep fried foods knowing that most of commercial places overheat the oil creating carcinogenic qualities that everyone should avoid. Chicken fat was the early fat of choice and it would be used over and over until it went rancid orthe health departments pulled the vendor up.

Never knew that. No wonder I feel like crap after eating deep fried fish and chips and other fatty foods.
